From our early days at Magic Leap testing in VR, we saw the tremendous potential of being able to socialize and go into experiences together. We set out to make that potential real in AR, where we could not only bridge distance, but also keep users aware of their current context. Our design philosophy was guided by research in preserving behavioral realism and a focus on facilitating collaboration via a strong sense of embodied agency and presence. I saw the evolution of Social from its initial consumer targeted Avatar Chat to the enterprise focused Meetings.
For all things Social on Magic Leap, I had the pleasure of working closely with Karen Stolzenberg (who led Social), Greg Tran (who led OS), Lorena Pazmino (who led Visual Design), and Frank Hamilton (who led prototyping).
My Contributions
Using tools like Illustrator, Sketch, Maya, and Unity I created design specifications for a multidisciplinary team of engineers, researchers, and artists building the experience. I defined interactions and user flows for getting into multi-user sessions, spatial positioning, avatar personalization, avatar behavior mapping, sharing and multi-user feedback. I interviewed users and conducted research, coordinated prototyping efforts, and led integration with 3D model review and annotation features.
